MASTER THESIS DESIGN STUDIO

ADAPTIVE REUSE OF GALERIJ DE WARE VRIENDEN

The following is the final product of a design studio completed during my Master's degree and was completed as a group of 2. The project involved the adaptive reuse of a rundown shopping arcade in Hasselt, Belgium, into a mixed-use hub in the city centre. Careful consideration was given to the interaction of new construction with the existing urban fabric of the old town. The goal of the project was to develop affordable housing in the central core while providing amenities such as a public green space to draw people back to the site. A physical model was produced to test the design within the city block. The final design solution was critiqued by a team of Hasselt's urban planners.
